On June 5th, three natives of Poland were ordained
to the Order of Priest in a ceremony at St. Michael's Cathedral in
Springfield. Real to Reel's Steve Kiltonic reports it was a rare event
in that it was the first time in recent history that three men all
from the same country outside of the United States were ordained together.
The National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge,
Massachusetts marked its 50th anniversary on May 29th. The jubilee
celebration served as a joyous occasion not only for the Marian Fathers
of the Immaculate Conception, who began building the shrine 60 years
ago, but also for their many benefactors, friends and supporters.
Reporter Julie Beaulieu was on Eden Hill for the event and has the
story.
Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church marked
the 100th anniversary of the founding of the parish with a mass on
May 23rd. The parish, which began as a Mission Church of St. Mary
Church in Westfield, is now home to more than 4,500 parishioners.
Real to Reel's David Martin reports it was only last October when
Blessed Sacrament formally dedicated a new church building after the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts took its Union Street property by eminent
domain for the Great River Bridge expansion project.
It's been a fixture of the American musical landscape
for 200 years, providing solace to soldiers during the Civil War and
comfort to cowboys on the prairie. But, a group of Western Massachusetts
Seniors has been delighting audiences for years, too, with the sounds
of - the harmonica. Sharon Roulier has the story.

Monsignor Leo Leclerc, Pastoral Vicar for the Diocese
of Springfield, passed away on May 23rd after a courageous battle
with cancer. He was 75. Msgr. Leclerc, long-time pastor of St. Rose
de Lima parish in Chicopee, was remembered by longtime friends, parishioners
and fellow clergy as a gentle man who preached the gospel of love.

St. Mary Parish in Westfield, in a creative and innovative
way, is reaching out to others via the internet. Correspondent Peggy
Weber reports on how the church is trying to plug people in to parish
life.
The largest group of graduates in the history of Elms
College in Chicopee were handed their diplomas on May 16th. Reporter
Julie Beaulieu was there for all of the pomp and circumstance.
The role of the Deacon is to serve - serve the Church,
serve its people and serve Christ. Deacon Angel Perez also pledged
to protect and serve the City of Springfield in a vastly different
capacity, defending not only his faith but also the law. Real to Reel’s
Steve Kiltonic has the story of “The Deacon Detective.”

Teri Breguet reports on the legacy of the Sisters
of Providence in the Diocese of Springfield. Their hallmarks include
Mercy Medical Center, Brightside for Families and Children and Mary's
Meadow.
Early Italian Renaissance masterpieces are part of
an exhibit at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum now through May
30th. Sister Cathy Homrok talks with the museum curator about the
significance of Panel Paintings.
Three hundred people attended a dinner at the
Knights of Columbus Castle of Knights in Chicopee last week to say
Thank You to their men religious. Pope Benedict XVI has declared this
the Year of the Priest.
A repeat winner was crowned at the Fourth Annual Spelling
Bee at St. Marys Academy in Longmeadow this spring. Julie Beaulieu
has the story.

The Diocese of Springfield has welcomed four Missionary
Sisters of Perpetual Help to
Western Massachusetts. The Sisters are from Mexico and their mission
is one of
evangelization connecting Spanish-speaking people with the Catholic
faith.

in support of the children of Haiti.

a comeback at least as far as Catholic publications are concerned.
Terry Hegarty reports on how the magazine format is replacing Diocesan
newspapers.
Ken Lancaster talks with Sr. Cathy Homrok, Co-Director
of Catholic Communications, about plans to cease publication of the
Catholic Observer in July and implement a new, monthly diocesan magazine
later this summer.

the process instills life skills that will last forever.
